RESEARCH & SOURCES

Built through study.
Deepened by experience.

Behind Andalusia Wine Academy is a sustained commitment to understanding the region’s wines: through formal wine education, extensive reading, online and in-person learning, comparative tasting and visits across Andalusia.

THE KNOWLEDGE BEHIND THE GUIDE

A broad foundation.
A connected view.

Our purpose is to connect what is often presented in fragments: the grapes, landscapes, people, techniques, food and history that make Andalusia such a compelling wine region.

The Academy brings formal study, continuing education, books and specialist research together with time spent exploring and tasting across the region. This breadth of learning shapes the regional guides, winery directory and experiences at the table.

The references linked here are a selection from that wider body of knowledge. Individual guides and winery profiles provide further sources and research dates. As our study and exploration continue, so does the guide.

Meet Ilja, your host

Formal wine education

WSET and SWEN study provide a structured foundation for understanding grape varieties, regional styles, viticulture, winemaking and tasting. That knowledge helps us explain both what is in the glass and why it tastes as it does.

Continuing education

Online and in-person courses, specialist sessions and masterclasses keep our knowledge developing. Ilja is currently deepening his tasting practice through the Wine Scholar Guild Tasting Diploma programme, as part of an ongoing commitment to learning and staying up to date.

Books & specialist reading

Wine reference books, regional writing and specialist reading add depth to the research. They help connect geography, grape varieties, winemaking and heritage, placing individual wines and producers within a wider story.

Vineyard & cellar visits

In-person visits across Andalusia give the research a sense of place. We connect what we read with what we observe in vineyards, bodegas and tasting rooms, and with the landscapes and food culture around them.

Tasting & food pairing

Comparative tasting and the exploration of food pairings turn technical knowledge into practical understanding. Looking closely at different grapes, styles and regions helps us make wine approachable for newcomers and rewarding for experienced enthusiasts.

Producer, regional & historical research

Winery information, regulatory councils, appellation specifications, regional institutions and historical scholarship support the guide. They add detail to our accounts of wine styles, landscapes and heritage, and provide sources for individual producer profiles.

SELECTED REFERENCES & FURTHER READING

Follow the curiosity.

Explore selected educational resources, original research and institutional references behind the guide. These links offer a starting point for further reading alongside the books, courses, tastings and visits that inform our work.

ADDITIONAL REGIONAL REFERENCES

A LIVING BODY OF RESEARCH

Depth, detail and continuing discovery.

Keeping the guide current

We completed an extensive review of Andalusian wineries and vineyards in October 2026 and continue to develop the collection. Individual profiles show their research or review dates, with source links for readers who want to explore further.

Planning a visit

Producer profiles distinguish published visitor experiences from visits that need an enquiry. Tour language, opening hours and availability belong to each producer, so confirm those practical details when planning your visit.

Connecting wine and heritage

Historical scholarship and regional sources help us connect ancient wine culture, changing trade, phylloxera and the renewal of vineyards with the wines made today. The regional guides bring that context together with the distinctive stories of individual producers.
